Working with Ghosts

Epilogue: Debriefing

Shadowman sat back in his seat. "That was some story."

It was shortly afterwards. Shadowman was debriefing Geminiman with Topman while Needlegal and Spark Chan were in the medical bay undergoing repairs with Magnet and Hardman keeping them company. Snakeman was at his own debriefing with Crorq, telling the chief of police the details on the mission the other Mechs were on.

Geminiman sighed. "I feel like a failure."

"A failure?"

"Bongun, Sohee, and Munak were all friends. I coerced them into coming here and, while it wasn't my fault that I forgot them, they would still be here had I never brought them to Monsteropolis."

The ninja looked pensive. "So you think you've hurt them by bringing them here?"

"Isn't that the case?"

"I don't think so. Not ultimately anyway." Geminiman looked up to see Shadowman looking thoughtful. "They've been stuck here for who knows how many years. Thanks to your involvement they've found peace."

"Do you really think so?"

"You told me that Bongun said Munak and Sohee told him where the pledge stone was after they were dissipated by Holzenbein. That suggests they found their way to Heaven, or an acceptable equivalent at least."

Geminiman sighed. "I really hope that's the case."

"You also did well in getting Xelloss to leave the world alone forever. I have to admit, I wondered what he was up to while we were away. I thought he had just gone home. It's strange that we'll never bump into him again. But good."

"And I also helped kill that bastard Holzenbein. That has to count for something."

Shadowman didn't tell Geminiman that Holzenbein survived the fight and was recovering at a nearby hospital. The once muscular man was now thin and pale. He had obviously lost whatever power he stole from Xelloss, but he was still alive. And he had not revealed that the Mechanical Maniacs had fought him; he blamed the attack on the "unknown robot terrorist" that attacked his building. he had as much to lose as the Mechs did if their fight ever became public knowledge. Eventually - soon - Geminiman would find out Holzenbein was still alive, but Shadowman wanted to let him rest easy for now and enjoy his victory. He earned himself the rest.

"Just get better, Gemini. We have a lot of work to do. As you might have heard we got nowhere in our pursuit of Waveman. We still have no idea what the Scissor Army's up to."

Geminiman scowled. "I've eased one old mistake off my conscience today. I'd love to ease that burden as well."

"Then rest up. We'll have a busy day tomorrow."

Geminiman followed the ninja out of the meeting room and took in his surroundings. He reflected on his ghostly friends and felt as if they truly were watching over him in the afterlife. One day they would be reunited. But for now life was good. The Robot Master breathed a deep, simulated, breath and smiled broadly. Life was beautiful and so was he. He'd take one step forward followed by another. Until they led him to a bright future.
