Let's just say it like it is, folks: Megaman continuity is a mess.
Without a doubt the primary source for Classic Megaman is the japanese sourcebooks and games (in that order). We can't read it ourselves, but that's why games have translations! For years we got our information directly from Capcom USA and we liked it. So you'd think you'd be able to trust the official English translations, right? Right?
Not a chance.
Oh, there's a great deal that overlaps without any effort. Yet, there are some small things ... and some great things that do differ.
And, as it's my self-appointed task to keep track of the weird and obscure, I shall bring it upon myself to show exactly how the English boxes and manual diverge to create their own continuity!
Bear in mind that every box and manual is made by Capcom, so they are all canon. However, the number of differences and their impact on Megaman products throughout English-speaking media give a testament to the power of these localizations.
The point of this is to chronicle as many points from the manual and boxes of the English games as I would for any other aspect of obscure Megaman media. To that end, I won't go into the in-game dialogue. Generally, there's not enough here to go wrong; the greater deviations are all from the manuals and games. Of course, if this were the X series I would go into the games as well (as there is ample changes), but I'm only interested in the classic series for this article.
There is some sentiment that Capcom USA has "no right" to make any changes to thefranchise. And that thjere is no "US Game continuity", just mistranslations. To these people I say: you have flawed logic. As this region's official representative Capcom USA (and everything they publish) is an official source of MM information. For a long time it was the only source of MM information. When looking up information it is to them that people look toward first. The changes they made (for whatever reason they made them) have had a lasting impact on the series, despite your own feelings on the matter. Their story is presented as a single whole. And so, they are their own continuity. If there are inconsistancies, that is simply the nature of the beast and does not refute the matter. There are a great many continuities that are thought out poorly; it is completely irrelevant.
Giving out credit to the Megaman Network for their awesome transcriptions of most of the Megaman manuals out there.

Will you and Mega Man penetrate the seven separate societies of Dr. Wily and preserve the human race? You're in control!
It's MEGA MAN versus the powerful leaders and fighting forces of Monsteropolis - that strange multi-layered land of robot-like Humanoids created by the wrongly preformed experiments with human being by Dr. Wily.
MEGA MAN - the chosen defender of the human race. For he dares to single-handedly penetrate Monsteropolis' seven separate societies to stop the rapid expansion of strange misrepresentations of humans.
MEGA MAN's goal is monumental. He must infiltrate seven separate heavily guarded empires. By himself, he must break-down and destroy the followers os the empire leaders: Cutman, Gutsman, Iceman, Bombman, Fireman, Elecman, and Dr. Wily.
He's back! And this time the evil Dr. Wily (once the supreme power in the universe) has created even more sinister robots to mount his attack. But as MegaMan, you've also grown in power and ability. Can you save mankind from the evil desires of Dr. Wily? Each of the eight empires is rules by a different super-robot. You must defeat each enemy on his own turf, building up weapons as you go. Only after all are destroyed will you go head-on with the mastermind himself, the evil Dr. Wily. But be alert, MegaMan, Dr. Wily has power his creations do not! Civilization relies on your skill and courage-confident that you, MegaMan will stand tall in the end!
Mega Man 3 Explodes in Back-to-Back Robot Battle!
It's robot rebellion and nobody's safe! Least of all Mega Man. This time the superpowerful cyborg takes on a horde of metal maniacs who've had it with being obedient! And they use every android-annihilator ever invented to make you believe it!
Mega Man goes berserk, blasting through a galaxy of mining stations in search of energy crystals. But it takes more than guts to battle the phenomenal robot masters who control these worlds. It's a wrenching job, the worst - and best - that Mega Man's faced so far!
"Calling Mega Man! Calling Mega Man! Come in please! "Mega Man, we need you! We're down to the wire on our peace-keeping project. We've got to get those last energy crystals or we can't finish it. Dr. Wily is here now, too... Yes... he's finally found his sanity. He knows where the crystals are! They're in the mining worlds, but we can't get to 'em. The robots are running amok and they're destroying everything! "You've got to get there, Mega Man, and get those crystals!
You'll have to face some pretty mean metal. Expect the worst! Is Rush there with you? Give him a bolt to chew on and tell him it's from us. What's that -- we must be getting static-- sounds like you said 'Woof!'
"Mega Man, get to those mining worlds pronto! Grab the crystals and stop whoever's in charge! He's one lunatic guy!
"This is Dr. Light. Over and out!"
Battle your way through a mad onslaught of crazed machinery. The Robot Masters pour on more insane weapons than you can believe! They clank, buzz, crawl, shoot, and blast from every direction. Explore every room and corridor. Climb every ladder. Dodge, slide, leap, and fire to blast your attackers or at least get away! You start the round with 3 chances to make it through. Watch your Energy Meter at the top left corner of the screen. Your energy drains away as you take the crushing blows your foes dish out. Good thing you've got a steel noggin! Pick up Energy Tanks, Energy Pellets, and Surprise Boxes to gain back energy and chances. When your energy runs out, you lose one chance and the round ends. If you have chances left, you'll start again. Keep going! Destroy all the robot fiends in this level, and you'll face the diabolical Robot Master. His Energy Meter appears to the right of yours, so you can keep an eye on who's winning! If you lose all your chances, the game ends. But if you demolish the Robot Master, you gain his weapons and capture the energy crystals from his world. Then you can take on the next maniac.

Russian Robots on the Rampage!
For a year the city has been quiet, but a new robotic terror has gripped the city! That scheming scientist, Dr. Cossack has arrived in town with eight new metal maniacs who are bigger and badder than anything Dr. Wily ever dreamed of. It's going to be a cybernetic showdown as the streets of the city erupt with the sizzling sounds of molten metal!
Armed with the new Mega Buster, Mega Man runs, jumps and dodges his way through mazes of metallic munchkins on his way to the Siberian citadel of Dr. Cossack for the final cataclysmic clash!
A year after the destruction of Gamma, a mysterious message arrives at Dr. Light's lab...
Good evening, Dr. Light. Allow to me introduce myself -- I am Dr. Cossack. You may not have heard of me, but soon the world will know my name.
Over the years, you have been hailed as the greatest robot designer in the world, while my robotic creations have been totally ignored. I cannot allow this to continue. The world must be made aware of my genius!
From my Siberian citadel, I've sent eight of my most powerful robots to destroy the titanium troublemaker, Mega Man. Once they have obliterated him, I will place his broken body on display for the entire world to see. Only then will I be allowed to take my place as the greatest robot designer of all time!
Dr. Cossack
The Vengeance of Protoman!
Protoman has gone berserk! Destroying half the city was not enough, Now he has snatched Dr. Light and is holding him and the entire city hostage. Speeding to the rescue us Mega Man and his modified Mega Buster, but eight of Protoman's cybernetic soldiers plan to send Mega Man to the scrap heap for good!
Feel the weight of the world on your shoulders as you battle Gravity Man! Chip away at the rock-like defenses of Stone man and bring him crumbling down! Hit the surf and sail up against the tidal power of Wave Man! Help Mega Man defeat all eight of Protoman's robots and then get ready for the final fight that pits brother against brother in the battle of the century!
"Cossack to Mega Man! Cossack to Mega Man! Come in, Mega Man!"
"Protoman has gone wild! City Hall and the spaceport have been totally destroyed and the city's power grid is in shambles. I've never seen destruction on this scale before."
"I know you're worried about Dr. Light, but your first duty is to free the city from the grip of Protoman's robots. I can modify your reactor to give the Mega Buster a little more power, but the rest is up to you. Dr. Light and I had been working on a special project, but it's not finished yet. Maybe if I can get it working, it might give you an edge."
"Remember to watch your back Mega Man. Protoman seems to have become more ruthless than we had thought possible. Good Luck."
"Cossack out!"
The dark shadows of Protoman's eight robots now cover the city. Each of these cybernetic soldiers have surrounded themselves with wave after wave of mindless metal munchkins who are just waiting to pound Mega Man! It's up to you to run, jump and climb past death-dealing robots and metallic maniacs to get into the robot master's inner sanctum. Once you arrive, you'll dig in and stand toe-to-toe against his awesome attacks! Pummel him with the power of your Mega Buster to throw him on the scrap heap for good. Add his weapon to your arsenal and get ready for action as you face the next robotic rebel!
Prior to Dr. Light's kidnapping, he and Dr. Cossack had been working on a brand new attack robot named BEAT. Hidden throughout the city are the parts to activate this powerful new ally. If Mega Man can collect the letters to spell out M E G A M A N V, Mega Man can call and activate BEAT.
Let the games begin!
From the United States, Canada, and Japan they came. The world's premier designers and their finest robotic warriors traveled to do battle in the First Annual Robot Tournament. But what began as a game suddenly took a terrifying twist! On the eve of the Grand Championship, the sponsor of the event announced that the entire tournament was just an elaborate scheme to get his hands on the world's most powerful robots! Now faced with an army of metallic mercenaries, Mega Man must fight a ferocious new foe - The Mysterious Mr. X!
The most talented robot designers from across the globe have come to the 1st Annual Robot Tournament sponsored by the billionaire, Mr X. Traveling from Japan, Canada and the United States, the designers have brought their finest cybernetic creations to do battle in a series of tests to see which robot can claim the title of "The Most Powerful Robot In The World."
Nothing seems strange as the contest begins, but when the top eight robots enter the arena for the final event, the lights dim and the mysterious Mr. X appears...
"Ladies and Gentlemen... I wish to thank you all for coming to see the final event of my 1st Annual Robot Tournament. As you know, I have kept the final event of the tournament a secret. This event will test the strength, skill and intelligence of each of these find robots. In fact, it will also test the strength and skill of each one of you. That may seem strange, but I'm sure you will understand when I explain that the final test for these robots is to help me conquer the world!"
"Please excuse me and my robots as we teleport out of here, but we have a lot of work to do. But don't worry, you'll see me again soon. Real soon!"
Not even prison can keep Dr. Wily Down!
Dr. Wily broke out of prison! With the help of Rush, Beat and Dr. Light can MEGA MAN put the slippery Dr. Wily back in prison where he belongs? The future of the world hangs on MEGA MAN'S every more. Go get 'em MEGA MAN!
The world's pulse raced with excitement! Everyone truly believed the conniving Dr. Wily had been stopped for good and imprisoned by the valiant Mega Man. Reporters jockeyed with cameramen for snapshots as the infamous Doctor hung his head while being dragged away in handcuffs. Dr. Wily would soon be behind bars. Or would he?
Dr. Wily was ready for anything. He had known his dastardly plans would end in failure someday, so after six months without contact his laboratory sprung to life. Monitors whirred into action, lights flashed and the lab control panel booted up. In no time four hidden robots emerged. The robots then began a rampage in search of their master. Wily had done it again. Nothing would get in their way!
The world's racing pulse turned to nervous fear as a city was pummeled. Wasn't Dr. Wily in jail? Why was this still happening? The four robots took no heed to the great robot creator Dr. Light. Mega Man found Dr. Light and the canine cyborg Rush fallen in the streets.
"Dr. Light? Are you O.K.?" Mega Man shouted.
"Mega Man! We have no time," replied Dr. Light. "Dr. Wily is using his robots to cover up his escape. You must go! Follow his spaceship!!!"
Mega Man, Dr. Light and Rush looked on in horror as Dr. Wily's spaceship shot out of the prison. Dr. Wily was on the loose!
WHEN A GIGANTIC SPACE EXPLOSION SENDS TWO STRANGE METEORS CRASHING TO EARTH. THE CALL GOES OUT AND. MEGA MAN SPEEDS TO THE SITE. THERE HE SEES HIS ARCH-RIVAL, DR. WILY, FLEEING THE SCENE, CLUTCHING ONE OF THE MYSTERIOUS METALLIC METEORS. NOW MEGA MAN MUST UNCOVER THE SECRET OF THE SECOND METEOR IN A RACE TO STAY ON STEP AHEAD OF DR. WILY AND HIS DEADLY BREED OF SUPER-POWERED ROBOTS.
WITH THE WHOLE CASTE ASSEMBLED FOR MEGA MAN'S 32-BIT DEBUT AND AN EXCLUCIVE ON-SCREEN MEGA MAN 8 JAPANESE ART COLLECTION, THE 10TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION IS THE ULTIMATE MEGA PACKAGE. THE BLUE BOMBER'S BACK!
Manual Highlights
Dr. Light sped to his controls to react to the sudden alarms. Lights flashed and electronic sounds blared. He scanned the meters and checked the print-out for any clues to what had just happened. Then the computers centered on the disruption in the radar and brought it on-screen. "Mega Man, come in! You must investigate the disturbance immediately. Come in, Mega Man!" A hologram displaying the gentle face of the Titanium Titan gradually materialized, and Dr. Light breathed a sigh of relief. Mega Man was already in the vicinity. "Yes, Dr. Light. I have the readings. From the looks of it that comet was not an accident. I detect a high concentration of metal alloy in that fireball. I bet Dr. Wily is behind this." "If not, he at least knows about it and is near-by. It crashed onto that deserted island. If Wily's there, don't let him get away. And be careful Mega Man. Remember what happened the last time!"
Mega Man is not alone on this adventure. Dr. Light has been busy creating other robots to help Mega Man find Dr. Wily. Here are those that Mega Man can count on when he needs help:
ROLL
DL #002
Mega Man's younger sister Roll works in the laboratory and assists Dr. Light in turning the bolts Mega Man collects into those nifty items he can obtain at the lab. For more of this, see the next section.
PROTO MAN
DL #000
Dr. Light's first creation seems to be at the right place at the right time. Good ol' Proto Man. You know good things are usually when he shows up.
AUTO Normally a technical assistant in the lab, the beefy Auto steps out of the lab and into the hunt with his custom weapon. Mega Man can definitely count on Auto to lend a hand.
EDDY "FLIP-TOP" Dr. Light made Eddy to transport things from the lab to his robots in the field. Now Eddy has been equipped with the ability to fly. So, along with Eddy, Mega Man has some real fire power.
BEAT The famous crime-fighting bird named Beat is always out for world peace. Beat was built by Dr. Cossack, a longtime friend and colleague of Dr. Light. Cossack and Light worked together so well that they gave Beat to support him in battle. While flying, Beat will dash out to attack if fully charged.
RUSH Where would any person be without a trusty canine at their side? The same goes for the Blue Bomber and Rush the Robo Dog. Rush ran transform himself into many different vehicles so Mega Man cannot do without him. All Rush powers have limited energy, and once you call on him you must use all the energy from that power. Rush has 6 forms, but Mega Man can only call on 4 by himself.
Special Rush allows Dr. Light to send a holographic image to communicate with Mega Man, while Rush Jet gives Mega Man the power to fly. Use the DIRECTIONAL Button to move the Rush Jet. Mega Man can only fire to the right while on Rush jet, but can use any Robot Weapons at his disposal.
Rush Bike - Call up the Rush Bike and zoom through enemies with no problems. Mega Man will not take any damage while on the bike, but Rush's energy takes a pummeling if you ram enemies. To leave the bike, press the DIRECTIONAL Button A and the JUMP button to jump off the bike.
Rush Bomber - Rush will drop bombs to help you.
Rush Charger - Mega Man will receive life energy or weapon energy. Rush will drop these down for Mega Man to collect.
DR. ALBERT W. WILY
The evil scientist never gives up. Try and try as he might, Thomas Light is always there to get the upper hand. Even back in their days at the Robot Institute of Technology Dr. Light got all the attention and accolades. Wily has vowed to become the greatest robot maker the world has ever seen, but Dr. Light's Mega Man has consistently foiled Wily's schemes to control the world.
BASS AND TREBLE
An interesting pair. Who would have ever thought to pair a robot with a trusty canine sidekick? Wily figured if you can't beat 'em, copy 'em, so now Rush and Mega Man have Bass and Treble to deal with. Bass is convinced he can defeat Mega Man by himself yet welcomes the fierce Treble.
It's MEGA MAN versus the powerful leaders and fighting forces of Monsteropolis - that strange multi-layered land of robot-like Humanoids created by the wrongly-preformed experiments with human beings by Dr. Wily.
MEGA MAN - the chosen defender of the human race. For he dares to single-handedly penetrate Monsteropolis' eight separate societies to stop the rapid expansion of strange misrepresentations of humans.
MEGA MAN's goal is monumental. He must infiltrate eight heavily-guarded empires. He must break-down and destroy the followers of the empire leaders: Tornado Man, Galaxy Man, Plug Man, Concrete Man, Jewel Man, Magma Man, Hornet Man, and Splash Woman.
The action involved MEGA MAN armed only with laser beam weapons, encountering strangely-configured Humanoids. They're atop, in, and out of fortified prison-like structures strengthened with thick walls. Dr. Wily will stop at nothing to control the world and who would have thought his next move would be to attack the world's most popular sport? Dr. Light is ready and he's preparing Mega Man for a new type of battle.
As the two best soccer teams in the nation took the field for the championship, suddenly the stadium was pelted with blasts of fire and the field was engulfed in smoke. The smoke cleared and some very familiar robots replaced the players on the field. Dr. Wily had sent his greatest robot creations like Skull Man, Cut Man, Wood Man, Needle Man and Pharaoh Man to rule the soccer world.
But Dr. Light was prepared for this new tactic. Almost instantly a reserve of Mega Man robots appeared to take on the evil forces in the strangest game of soccer ever seen. No matter where evil appears, Mega Man will be there to kick one past Dr. Wily and his robot masters.

Mega Man - The chosen defender of the human race, the universe, and it's inhabitants. He is Dr. Wright's (and his assistant Dr Wily's (who assisted in unknown ways)) first near-human robot (a Humanoid). (MM1) He is a super powerful cyborg. (MM3) He is the second robot created by Dr. Light (noted after MM3). Created only to perform functions in the lab, but was slowly used for more advanced robotics experiments. (MM8) An outstanding example of the robot race, he lived a serene life as Light's assistant. Mega Man requested to be made into a battle robot in order to stop Dr. Wily. (MMnB)
Arm Cannon - Mega Man's standard weapon. (MM3) This term was widespread in gaming magazines and tip books back in the day.
Plasma Cannon - Mega Man's standard weapon; another name for the Arm Cannon. (MM1 GB) This term influenced the MM TV show and it became widely known that Mega Man runs on "plasma power". It's actually really impressive when you consider that MM1GB is a pretty obscure title and is the only one to mention his weapon being powered by plasma.
Laser Beams - Mega Man's Mega Buster. (MM3GB) (MM9)
Mega Buster - Mega Man's standard weapon from MM4 and beyond. (MM4+)
In general, Mega Man himself can be regarded fairly consistently. Although Megamans 1 and 2 make some pretty wild claims, and MM3 retcons Protoman, Megaman's history is pretty consistent. Despite MM8 not mentioning Wily being Light's assistant, it would be wrong to think that he is Wily's creation as much as he is Light's; but more on this later. Ironically, both he and Wily were Light's assistant in the US game continuity.
Mega Man's look on the box is also really inconsistent. However, art on the box has never been meant to be seen as definitive; it's always meant to be understood as overriding (even if the history is additive). Therefore, his anime look would beat all the others out. However his look from MM3 through Megaman 7 would be used fairly consistently for a long time.
In terms of Mega Man alone not much has been changed from Rockman, really. However, the use of terms prevailed greatly throughout the franchise's history.
Dr. Wright (MM1 spelling) Light (MM2+ spelling) Thomas Light (MM8+ spelling) - A brilliant scientist who conceived of the construction of Humanoids. (MM1) Hailed as the greatest robot designer in the world. (MM4) He's brilliant, but absent-minded and misplaces Rush's adaptors in between games. (MM5GB) He goes all out to create robots that help mankind in peaceful ways. Whenever he sees someone in trouble he's the type of guy who just can't stand by and watch - he figures out how to help! (MMnB)
Dr. Wily (MM1+), Dr. Albert W. Wily (MM8+) Dr. Wiley (MMnB) - Former assistant to Dr. Wright. Assisted in the creation of Mega Man and all six Humanoids (in unknown ways). Turned disloyal and reprogrammed them so he could control the world and it's resources (MM1). During MM1 he was the supreme power in the universe. He has powers his creations do not! (MM2). Once worked for the Robot Institute of Technology where Dr. Light got all the attention and accolades. Wily has vowed to become the greatest robot maker the world has ever seen. (MM8) He is unbelievably insane. (MM1 GB) He was Dr. Light's classmate at robotic engineering school (presumably the aforementioned Robot Institute), and has become his rival in professional life. (MMnB)
Dr. Wily is rather infamous in his treatment. The Japan Wily was never Light's assistant. He went into seclusion and emerged only when he stole Right's robots. The US games do not imply a seclusion and Wily was able to steal Wright's robots because he was his assistant and (it's implied) that he had inside access.
Some say that the MM1 manual states that Wily also made Megaman and that it means the entire US manual is not canon. However, this is not true. The wording isn't very good, but it merely says Wily assisted and does not go further into the matter. We have absolutely no idea how Wily assisted, so we can't say that Megaman is his as much as he is Light's regardless of what people think Wily's assistance might entail.
Regardless, this point is at the root of US game continuity. Wily being Light's assistant influenced every single piece of US-related media (although he was Light's partner in the Dreamwave comics, the root is clear). This point is further highlighted by the knowledge that the MM TV shows were translated into Japanese, bringing the change right back home to roost.
Rush - Mega Man's Dogdroid; Rush can change into mighty machines that get you through tough spots. In the manual it is implied that Rush cannot talk (as he can in other material). (MM3) He's a Robo-dog. (MM2GB) His upgrades are removed after each game and stores in Light's lab, where a Robot Master typically steals them. (MM4GB) Sometimes they have to find them first as Light is prone to misplacing them. (MM5GB)
Flip Top (MM4-8) Eddy (MM8+) - Dr. Light's cybernetic suitcase. He automatically goes back to Light's Lab for a refill after he gives Mega Man a powerup. (MM4) Dr. Light made Eddy to transport things from the lab to his robots in the field. Now Eddy has been equipped with the ability to fly. So, along with Eddy, Mega Man has some real fire power. (MM8)
The name "Flip Top" actually stuck around longer than I really remembered and it was one of the few things the TV show never picked up. Later the name Eddy was transitioned into the series.
Beat - Created by Dr. Light and Dr. Cossack prior to Light's capture in MM5. (MM5) Built by Dr. Cossack (Kossack in MMnB). He is always out for world peace. (MM8, MMnB) Mega Man needed more help, so Dr. Light created Beat. (MM4GB)
The manuals actually go back and forth over who made Beat a lot. This is likely a translation issue with the Capcom USA guys filling in the blanks when they didn't actually have the info. This time the original information is truer because it makes more logical sense.
Roll - Mega Man's younger sister, Roll works in the lab with dr. Light. She helps him turn Bolts into items. (MM8) Rill is an assisting engineer created by Dr. Light. (MMnB)
Proto Man (Blues in MMnB) - Framed in MM5. Dr. Light's first creation. Good things are usually there when he shows up. (MM8) He moves of his own free will. (MMnB)
In Japan, Mega Man does not know Proto Man is his bother. Evidently the ending to MM3 was just things shown to the viewer. In fact, every translation with MM referring to PM as his brother was notthere in the Japanese version; it seems likely that the translators felt the need to exposit that PM is MM's bro in the dialogue (Proof on Capcom Japan's site). This has had a rather large effect on the Megaman TV show.
Auto (Lighttott in MMnB) - A technical assistant to Dr. light. (MM8)
Bass and Treble (Gospel in MMnB) - Wily figured if you can't beat 'em, copy 'em, so now Rush and Mega Man have Bass and Treble to deal with. Bass is convinced he can defeat Mega Man by himself yet welcomes the fierce Treble. (MM8) It's his life's work to defeat MegaMan with his own hands. (MMnB)
Monsteropolis - A multi-layered / multi-faceted land filled with robot-like Humanoids. The setting for MM1 and MM9 (box continuity). It's implied that each level in MM1 is on another layer (or facet) of Monsteropolis. Another possible reference is the unnamed city in MM5; in which every level is also said to take place in the one city. (MM5) The World Robot Expo that Wily commandeers for his own desires and the chaos that ensues is also said to take place in one unnamed city (despite Pharaohman's level being in the game). (MM4GB) Monsteropolis has seven societies, however these seem to be decided by the Humanoids who take over the areas, so it's not likely to be in the city planning.
Monsteropolis is one of the most infamous things from MM1's story and it was quickly shelved. However, after going through the material, I can't help but wonder if all the unnamed cities weren't thought of to be Monsteropolis by Capcom USA. Surprisingly, they never actually try to rename the place in any manual or box, so it still technically is where the US continuity MM lives since there is nothing to contradict it.
Cyborg - A term used repeatedly throughout the NES era games (and not just MM1). While the MM1 and MM9 box implies the Robot Masters used to be human in all other places "cyborg" is just another term for "robot". (MM3) (MM6) (MM7) (MM2GB) Robot Masters are also referred to as cyborgs on occasion, so it isn't limited to just Mega Man.
Super-Robot - Another name for Robot Master. (MM2)
Robot Master - aka "the "master" of all the "robots" in the level; the stage boss. This term would increase in use as the series went on. (MM3) Although all Robot Masters are Humanoids, not all Humanoids are Robot Masters (Megaman would be a Humanoid, but not a Robot Master). It's worthwhile to note that, although it's become a common term in Mega Man's media this term does not appear in Rockman. (More on Humanoids later.)
Energy Crystals - Another name for E-Tanks. (MM2) Elements needed to construct Gamma. (MM3)
Time Skimmer - The time machine used in MM2GB. Developed by the Chronos Institute. (MM2GB). It's worthwhile to note that the Wily Wars also makes use of time travel (yes, in both US and Japanese continuities); it's possible that the Wily Wars was meant to take place directly after MM2GB.
The MM1 box (and the MM9 box, since it was based on MM1's box) presents an unsolvably different continuity than that of the MM1 manual (and the other games) by it's description of Humanoids and the basic premise of MM1 and MM9.
Humanoids (MM1, MM9 box) - Created by wrongly preformed experiments by Dr. Wily (MM1) on humans; they are misrepresentations of humans. (MM9) It's possible that the humanoids here (and MM himself) are actual cyborgs.
Humanoids (MM1 manual) - Fully operational human-like experimental (at the time of MM1 anyway) robots who perform specific every day duties. Conceived of my Dr. Wright. They are the end bosses of MM1 (also known as Robot Masters). The first success was Mega Man himself (this was before Protoman's introduction to the series). (MM1) Since the term "Humanoid" includes Mega Man and "Robot Master" does not it may be right to say that the two terms are not synonymous.
The unsolvable difference is that the box credits Humanoids to Wily while mentioning them as "wrongly preformed experiments" and the manual credits them to Wright (with Wily's assistance). Although it's possible that Wily helped with knowledge gained through wrongly preformed experiments on humans the box story (by it's omission of Wright) does not imply this and MM9's wording would contradict this outright (since Wily was no longer Wright's assistant by this time).
The MM9 box was made as a joke by Capcom USA on the corny MM1 box of old. It bears little resemblance to the in-game story of MM9; MM9's game story details expiration dates for robots while the box maintains the Humanoids are still wrongly preformed experiments by Dr. Wily. MM9 maintains consistency with the MM1 box (while MM1's box is inconsistent with it's own manual), so it's correct to think of MM9 and MM1 sharing their own small continuity with the other MM games, possibly, not even happening.
Because it deviates so greatly from the MM1 (not only from the box and manual, but also as it agrees much more with the Japanese version of the game), as well as it's addition of Oilman and Timeman, I consider Megaman Powered Up to be a separate continuity rather than an addition or overwrite of the US game continuity.
As game information is supposed to be additive and not overwriting, MMPU provides an enormous amount of incomparable information. So much so that it's disruptive to the normal flow of information in the US game continuity. While it might overwrite continuity on the Japanese side of things (a whole 'nother discussion), it's simply seperate on the US side.
While the japanese game continuity is the primary one, it has one problem. Nobody can read it. Inevitably you have to rely on fan translations in order to get any information at all. This would be just fine, however, the same translators never cite their sources and feel the need to piece things together on their own. This makes fanon impossible to spot and discussion rather dead in the water.
Simply put, it's just plain impossible to piece things together all on your own. Unless you know Japanese of course.
So US gaming continuity has it's place. I'd much rather have a debate and be told that ideas and understanding make sense within the context of the US games than be told they simply aren't canon at all. Even while saying this, however, modern games are much more faithfully translated, so it's unlikely that these odd translation will apply anymore. Still, it's an interesting facet to the MM universe, and it's right under our nose.
